Hyundai Research Centre Rüsselsheim

Architecture for the Mobility of Tomorrow

The new research centre in Rüsselsheim brings together everything essential for developing tomorrow’s mobility under one roof: research and development areas, laboratories, test benches, workshops, administration, and exhibition spaces. This spatial connectivity creates synergies, short routes, direct communication, and an environment that supports innovation.

Connected research landscape with laboratories, test benches, development, and exhibition areas

Embedded within the growing campus of the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center

Open interior spaces with communication zones as platforms for interdisciplinary collaboration

The research centre is designed to accompany technological developments over the long term. Work here focuses on advancements in emissionfree mobility as well as on the evolution of SmartSense, Hyundai’s driverassistance technology. The architecture provides an inspiring and functional environment with clear organisation and flexible workplace modules that bring research and development together.

The new building is integrated into the growing research and development site of the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center. Its structural organisation enables highly efficient use: a robust base with workshops, storage areas, and specialist laboratories supports the transparent upper level with open laboratory and office areas. Proximity to the technical functions shortens processes and strengthens interdisciplinary workflows.

The building’s working environment is designed equally for exchange and focused activity. The communicative core provides flexible, nonassigned workstations, and various spatial modules for different forms of collaboration. The close spatial connection between laboratory and office levels strengthens internal exchange, while clearly organised quiet zones support concentrated work.

Generous roof gardens extend the working and communication spaces outdoors. They link the laboratory areas with the exhibition space, creating an immediate spatial relationship between research, presentation, and work.

The metallic double façade gives the building a distinctive identity. Its warm pearlcopper finish sets a recognisable accent within the heterogeneous surroundings. Behind its calm appearance lies a technically sophisticated system with pressurerelief panes that combines energy efficiency with constructive precision. Special profiles and curved elements highlight the high level of detail quality.
