With the “Middenzaal”, the Theater aan het Vrijthof in Maastricht gains a new face towards the city. The extension transforms the existing ensemble into an open, urban cultural building block: visible, accessible and identityforming. The sculptural form of the new volume strengthens the connection between the theatre and the city’s public life, creating space for encounter, exchange, and cultural diversity.

Theatre and city in dialogue

The Theater aan het Vrijthof has long been a cultural centrepiece of Maastricht. Until now, the historic Generaalshuis has defined the appearance facing the square, while the main halls oriented towards the courtyard. The new Middenzaal breaks this introverted structure: by opening towards the street, the theatre becomes part of the public realm and thus a more visible component of urban life.

Rotation as an urban gesture

The formal rotation of the building volume is more than an architectural detail: it enables harmonious integration into the fine‑grained surrounding structure, respects sightlines and creates space for a generous foyer zone. At the same time, the new volume steps back in relation to the listed building, creating a balanced ensemble of old and new.

Small in scale, bold in gesture

Sand‑coloured façade fins reference the region’s historic marlstone, lending the new hall material and formal clarity. Generous windows open the foyer towards the city, making the interior visible and inviting participation. The clear geometry ensures a high degree of functional flexibility suitable for theatre performances as well as international conferences.
