Historic Identity Meets Flexible Learning Environments
The Paul-Humburg School in Cologne brings tradition and future together: a listed historic building is carefully refurbished and complemented by two new structures. The ensemble preserves the historic identity while creating architecture that supports contemporary forms of learning.

The school faced the challenge of reconciling long-established structures with the requirements of modern pedagogy. The design responds with a clear organisational principle that enables short routes, flexible use, and high spatial quality. The ensemble frames a central campus area with green spaces, sports zones, and areas for recreation, creating a spatial zoning between quiet learning environments and active play areas.
The architectural organisation reflects the diversity of learning forms and the interplay of individual and collective learning. Classrooms, differentiation areas, and open forums are grouped into semi-autonomous clusters for each year group. These learning landscapes support both interaction and retreat. Generous corridors, niches, and visual connections create spaces for informal learning and communication.
The connection between existing and new structures is achieved through transparent transitions and double-height voids that retain the historic character of the preserved exterior walls. Large windows and ceiling-lights ensure abundant daylight and create a sense of transparency.
The library, conceived as a self-directed learning centre within the historic building, offers a high-quality learning environment with generous ceiling height, daylight from two sides, and flexible furnishings. It provides space for knowledge, quiet, and creative encounter.
A new sports hall combines school sports and community use within a light-filled venue with a tiered seating area, creating a central meeting point for activity, and shared experience.
