Interpersonal violence is a societal issue. University Hospital Düsseldorf is responding with a new building that brings together care and research. For the first time, the Social Paediatrics Centre, the Forensic Medical Outpatient Clinic and the Childhood House Düsseldorf are united at one location. This creates a centre that combines medical expertise with social responsibility.

The classic, protective form of a house serves as the guiding motif. Four closely aligned volumes, slightly offset from one another, create a distinctive yet playful appearance. This composition conveys a sense of safety and establishes an atmosphere in which people can feel secure.
Natural materials, gentle colours, and exposed timber structures shape the interior spaces. Timber as a loadbearing element reduces the building’s CO₂ footprint and has a calming effect on traumatised patients. In this way, the architecture becomes an active component of the healing process.
The building sits within a densely landscaped outdoor environment. The “green island”, featuring a playground and protected retreat areas, promotes well‑being and creates a child‑friendly atmosphere. A varied network of paths connects indoor and outdoor spaces, making nature tangible.
The Trube‑Becker‑Haus is fully funded through donations and was supported by HPP with a pro bono architectural concept. Rather than formal certifications, the focus lay on what matters most: “Just build us a good building.” At its core stands the principle of positivity: a climate‑friendly building that combines circularity, resource conservation and energy efficiency while fostering hope for the future on a human level.
